At some point in a yoga journey, this happens a desire to go deeper, boredom or dissatisfaction with a current yoga practice, or wanting more challenges.
Five years ago, these were hard to take for a yogini who had been practicing yoga her entire life. AcroYoga or Acro entered my life. AcroYoga is a practice that consistently and reliably explores the self, authentic relationships, and joy in all of life’s messiness. Acro has become my primary practice in life because it teaches me how to be fully alive and engaged in the world.
Yoga is a way of life, to paraphrase the world-renowned yoga teacher Donna Farhi. Painting, singing, or even Acro can be part of the practice.
Anything that helps you discover yourself in life is a form of yoga. Yoga is any form of exercise that’s done mindfully with commitment. The ultimate goal of yoga is to use what you learn on your mat in our relationships, at work, and during play.
It Teaches Grace with Ease
Acro is a practice that can be adapted to suit everyone, regardless of whether you feel too heavy, weak, or busy. Yoga is a good place to start, and you don’t need any previous acrobatics or gymnastics experience. Do not worry about holding other people back or not believing in your ability to lift or fly another person.
It is possible to achieve grace and ease with the right alignment and instructions.
In some moments, the union will happen by being slow and aware. The practice will then show true confidence (or beauty) in the form of a beautiful, confident performance.
It challenges Strength
Acro is a physical and emotional challenge. It strengthens the core and shoulders while also testing your ability to move with awareness.
It teaches emotional skills that will help you face life when it gets difficult. Acro, for example, requires communication and trust. My partner and I began to practice together, and there were many falls and arguments. We worked it out with patience and perseverance. This now affects our everyday relationship dynamics, especially when the shit comes out.
This improves inversions
Acro brings inversions to another level, whether you are working on forearm balances or handstands. As an adherent to alignment and supportive engagements, the concept of stacking contributes towards gorgeous lines that are healthy for the human body.
By combining the wisdom of an acrobat with the mindfulness and strength of a yoga practitioner, you will find your core. As confidence grows, you will also start to lose the fear of falling. Inversion is a love affair.
The use of Connection creates connectivity.
Acro is more of a relationship practice than a yoga practice. Acro allows you to reconnect with someone who is deeply loved.
Brene says: “I define connection to be the energy between people who feel heard, valued, and seen; when they are able to give and receive without judgement; and when they gain strength and sustenance from the relationship.”
In the chaos of daily life, putting the people first by doing a physical exercise creates intimacy in the partnership. This is a way of harmonizing an expression through breath and thoughtful touches.
You can travel the world with it.
It’s for those who are adventurous and have wanderlust in their hearts. Acro brings instant play and community, combining new friends with inspirational places.
I have been a nomad traveler for the past two years. During that time, I met amazing people in places such as Costa Rica, Thailand, and the Philippines. The iceberg is just the tip of a vast ocean of communities.
It helps with evolving as a human.
Acro is a safe place to explore new things or overcome limitations. Working through fear and exposing vulnerability can bring a feeling of freedom and accomplishment. We’re all in it together to change the mentality of “impossible,” both personally and collectively.
In developing my practice, the most powerful lessons have been transforming the physical into life. Free Star is a pose where someone uses their feet to balance me while upside down. I thought it was impossible. Now, thanks to my partner’s support and remaining calm, I am able to stay comfortably for several minutes.
Now I know what to do when these feelings come up in my life.
The Joy of Living is Elevated
Why not play pure? AcroYoga can help you achieve this by getting out of your headspace and focusing on happiness, joy, and Connection.
The idea of “getting older” is put into perspective when you go back to your ten-year-old self. Acro allows you to laugh while achieving and building lasting relationships. This makes those frustrating and frightening times much lighter.
It is a Community Practice
We all suffer from loneliness and disconnection. According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, “belonging is more fundamental than self-actualization or esteem, which confirms that it’s natural to want to be included.
Most people who practice Acro will say that it changed their lives. It provides a tribe that is open, loving, and accepting.
AcroYoga is needed in the world.
Acro breaks down barriers and opens the door to Connection. It allows us to realize that we are all in this together, no matter what our differences and struggles are. It opens our ability to be kind, sensitive, and aware through a shared practice. These are qualities that the Earth could certainly use more of.
