No matter what your level of practice is, there are three aspects that we need to keep an eye on and care for at all times. These are alignment, focus, and breathing.
Alignment
A good lineup will allow us to get the most out of our practice and also find a point where we feel comfortable.
Incorrect alignment can cause discomfort and, worse, lead to injury. It may seem not easy at first to accept the fact that your body cannot go where you want it to. However, with time and practice, your body will gain strength and flexibility, which will allow for greater reach and progression in your asana.
It is important to learn how to move slowly and to work on each variation or modification of the posture that suits our level.
Focus or Drishti
Drishti refers to the place where we focus our attention and gaze. Some people choose to fix their gaze at a certain point on a wall, while others focus on the tip of the nose. Focusing our attention and improving balance are two benefits of having a focal point.
Sometimes, the focus is on ourselves. When I practice, one of the things that I love most is doing pratyahara. This involves closing your eyes and withdrawing your senses.
You can then focus on your practice and become more aware of yourself.
Breath
The breath is important in yoga, even though it’s the last thing that I mention. The breath is essential to life. Without it, we would not be here.
Uneven or irregular breathing in yoga is a sign of a disturbed mind. We want to achieve a state of mind-body equilibrium where we breathe easily and in harmony with our body’s movements in yoga poses.
You will see your practice grow quickly and efficiently if you focus on these three areas. I also keep an eye on my drishti. I want not to go “faster” but to know that I’m practicing safely and am exactly where I should be.
