Three Yoga Poses for the Earth Element

Everything in nature is made up of five basic elements: earth, water, fire, air, and ether. Not only do they make up the world around us, but they also form the structure of our body, mind, and spirit.

Since ancient times, yogis have used the properties and energies of each element to cultivate similar qualities within themselves.

Start with Earth element poses to explore the five elements of yoga.

Earth Element

The earth element is related to the Root Chakra. It brings stability and grounding into our practice, drawing on the earth’s energies of commitment and steadfastness.

Try the following poses to bring “earthiness’ into your practice. Be aware of the downward energy flowing through your legs and the connection between your feet and the earth below.

Standing Mountain Pose (Tadasana)

Tadasana is the ultimate earth pose. It evokes a strong, unwavering mountain.

Focus on pressing the corners of your foot into the ground. Hugging your legs towards your midline, extend your tailbone to the ground and lift your head through your crown.

Tree Pose (Vrksasana).

The focus and commitment needed in balancing postures stabilize our bodies and minds. Vrksasana evokes the image of a deep-rooted tree.

Press down on the four corners of the foot while standing in Tree Pose. Engage the muscles of the standing leg by pressing the inner thigh into the raised foot.

As you anchor your Tree Pose, lengthen your tailbone to the floor. This will give it more stability. As you maintain a connection with the earth, grow your tree’s limbs by raising your arms above your head.

Warrior II

Virabhadrasana requires the steadfast dedication of a warrior. Strengthening your legs and opening up your pelvis will deepen your connection with the earth.

Bring your front leg straight and strong, and bend your knee 90 degrees over your ankle. Press the four corners of your feet onto the floor.

Feel the weight of the earth as you deepen your hips.

As you lift your pelvic bowl, your tailbone will lengthen. Observe the connection between rooting into the ground and drawing the earth’s energy through your legs to support this pose.

Bring more earth qualities to your practice. This will help you stay grounded and connected while seeking expansion.
