Forest bathing has become very popular in recent years. Intrigued? Do not put on your swimming suit just yet.
Forest bathing does not involve pools, hot tubs, or swimming holes. Forest bathing is a trip where you are immersed in the wilderness, not water.
What is Forest Bathing?
Forest bathing may be new in the West, but the Japanese have done it for over two decades. In 1982, the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries created a program that included leisurely trips into the wilderness to promote a healthy lifestyle.
The practice was called Shinrin Yoku or “forest bathing,” and the citizens were encouraged by the government to spend time in the forest and enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells.
Spending Too Much Time Indoors
The modern life is full of conveniences. We have many things that our ancestors could not even imagine. Indoor plumbing, HVAC systems, and WiFi are just a few examples.
All the benefits of modern living have led to some negatives. Despite our occasional beach and hike trips and Pokemon Go’s popularity, we are mostly indoor creatures.
According to a survey conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency, Americans spend 93 percent, on average, of their time indoors.
Spending so much time inside is bad for your health. According to the EPA, the amount of pollutants indoors can be twice or three times higher than the amount outdoors.
The benefits of spending time outside are numerous, both for mental and physical health.
Why Forest Bathe?
Several studies have shown that green spaces can make us healthier, according to the U.S. Department of Environmental Conservation. Simply spending time in a forest will boost your immune system.
You inhale the phytoncides that plants release to combat pests when you breathe in fresh forest air. The body increases the number of white blood cells called natural killer cells (NK cells), which fight certain cancers and diseases.
Some studies suggest that just looking at greenery and trees can lower your blood pressure, reduce your stress, and boost your mood.
Give it a Try!
Forest bathing is a great way to reconnect with nature, improve your health, and connect with the natural world. It’s free and easy. You can forest bathe at any time. Find a green area, such as a wood or forest. Then go on a walk or read a book. You can also draw, meditate, or practice yoga.
Listen to birds, watch insects, and smell the woodsy fragrance. Avoid places with a lot of hiking. The goal is to relax, be mindful, and not get a tough workout. Don’t forget to put your phone away when you go forest bathing.
