Learn how to make your chakras spin

The word chakra comes from Sanskrit and means “wheel.” There are seven chakras or energy points within our bodies, and each one has its character and is related to different aspects of who we are.

The chakras spin from our spines up to the top of our heads. Each chakra is related to our body functions and our emotions.

Why is it so important to understand your chakras and their functions? Blockages in chakra areas can cause physical or emotional tension or even dis-ease.

Muladhara, or Root Chakra

Where can you find it? On the base of your spinal column

Emotional Issues: Unfounded, Afraid, Rage and Anger, Self-Esteem issues and Security

Constipation, depression, and eating disorders are all signs of an unbalanced root chakra.

A balanced root chakra is characterized by feeling grounded, centered, committed, independent, having a lot of energy, vitality, and strength, and having the ability to digest food well.

How to get your root chakra spinning: Get grounded. Lay in Savasana. Connect with nature. Swim in the sea. Walk barefoot. Gardening. Cooking healthy. Hiking. Hug a tree.

Svadhishthana, or Sacral Chakra

Where can you find it? You will find it about 3 inches below your navel in the middle of your lower abdomen.

Emotional Issues: Shyness, guilt and blame, lack of creativity, irritability.

Unbalanced sacral chakra symptoms include lower back pain, sciatica pain, pelvic pains, poor digestion, hormonal imbalances, and menstrual issues.

Signs of a balanced Sacral Chakra include compassion, friendliness, intuition, sexuality, feeling content, a sense of belonging, and having fun.

You can get your sacral chakra spinning by doing hip-opening yoga poses. Take baths or dip your feet into the ocean.

Manipura, or Solar Plexus

Where can you find it? Above and below the navel

Emotional Issues: Fear, ignorance, treachery, and foolishness. Jealousy.

Diabetic issues, stomach ulcers, and digestive problems are all signs of an unbalanced solar Plexus.

Anahata (Heart Chakra)

What is it? Around your beautiful big heart.

Emotional Issues: Fear, envy, jealousy, and anger.

The signs of an unbalanced heart chakra include upper back and shoulder pain, asthma, heart conditions (including shallow breathing), and lung problems.

A balanced heart chakra is characterized by feeling complete and whole, being compassionate, empathic, friendly, optimistic, motivated, and nurturing.

You can get your heart chakra spinning by kapalabhati breathing; Cobra poses, being less judgemental of yourself, and treating yourself with rose petal body creams and baths.

Vishuddha, or Throat Chakra

Where can you find it? In the center of your throat, at your neck

Emotional Issues: Speaking up, being heard, and assertiveness.

Unbalanced throat chakra symptoms include sore throats, stiff necks, mouth ulcers, and swollen glands. Gum or tooth problems may also be present.

Signs of a balanced Throat Chakra: clear communication, calmness, attentive listening, positive expression

How to get your throat chakra spinning: Drink a lot of water, eat lots of fresh fruit, clean the air around you, open your windows, burn jasmine and rosemary oils, speak with your friends, and be honest about everything you say. Write down your thoughts, and sing loudly!

Ajna, or the Third-Eye Chakra

Where can you find it? In between your eyebrows

Emotional Issues: Fear of truth, confusion, lack of discipline, lack of concentration

Signs of an unbalanced third eye: headaches, vision problems, and learning disabilities

Signs of Balanced Third Eye: Intuitive, alert, creative, clear, with concentration and focus

Sahasrara, or Crown Chakra

Where’s it? On top of your head

The signs of a balanced Crown Chakra are feeling at peace with yourself, nature, and your surroundings, being aware, happy and calm, and comfortable in your skin.
