A slippery yoga mat is one of the worst and most dangerous things you can experience in a yoga asana practice. We all want a sufficiently cushioned, durable, non-slip yoga mat that’ll allow us to practice postures without slipping and falling on our faces.
Baller Yoga, a company based in LA, created a 100% pebble grain leather yoga mat. It has a good grip and is resistant to wear and tear. Baller Yoga’s founder Cedric YAU said that he had the idea while on a Bali yoga retreat and was frustrated by the mats.
He wanted a mat with a good grip without the sticky feeling. Football leather had that exact quality and would make a great material for yoga.
What’s all the “Controversy?” about?
The leather used to make the mats is not popular with the vegan and ahimsa communities.
You told The Guardian that “the leather is sourced from the meat industry.” Yau says, “We do not believe that animals should be killed for their skin.” He also admits they get some criticism from the vegan community.
“We see more and more football players and athletes coming to yoga…more and more people are looking at it as a form of exercise and way of improving athletic performance. We begin from this angle. “We are not looking at the vegan or vegetarian angle.”
The leather mats are available in four colors (red, black, and natural sand) and three sizes. The smallest mats (69.5″ x 24″) retail for $795, while the largest mats 80″ x 26″) cost $1500. Learn more about Baller Yoga’s yoga mats by clicking here.
