I’m a fully-fledged word nerd. And a yoga nut. So, I bring my love of language to the mat.
Sanskrit is like a soul whispering wisdom to me. I am always amazed at the familiar yet unfamiliar sounds that teachers use.
Since becoming a teacher, I am enjoying learning a new language. It feels like I have spoken it before.
Malasana is more inspirational than squatting. Chaturanga Dandasana has a similar sound. Parivrtta Prasarita Padottanasana is as complex as ‘rotated separated leg forward fold.’ Triang Mukha Ekapada Paschimottanasana, or ‘three-faced forward bend,’ also sounds complicated.
On Meditative Monologues
Although I like the sound of Sanskrit, I also appreciate teachers who go deep into ancient Vedic texts and reflect on the lessons taught by the Buddha, Rumi, Dalai Lama, and modern gurus.
Although elegant poses may inspire, I prefer eloquent sentences and meditative monologues.
My favorite teachers do more than teach; they also enlighten me. Kathy Kruger
As much as I practice asana, I am interested in learning about life. Sometimes, I feel the wisdom speaking to me, and other times, it’s something said that strikes me.
Here are some of my favorite quotes and sayings about yoga:
It’s not perfect yoga, but yoga practice.
It’s not clear who said it, but my yoga teachers use this phrase a lot.
Yoga does not remove you from reality and responsibility, but it places your feet firmly on the ground of practical experience. We do not transcend our lives, but we return to what we left behind with the hope of something better. Donna Fabri
Yoga is an internal discipline. “The rest is a circus.” Sri Pattabhi Jois
Jason Crandell: “The nature of yoga is that it shines the light of consciousness into the darkest parts of the body.”
Patanjali: “A mind that is free of all disturbances, this is Yoga.”
“The attitude gratitude is the highest form of yoga” – Yogi Bhajan
You cannot do yoga. Yoga is your natural state. Yoga exercises can help you discover where you’re resisting your natural state.
“Don’t do what you fear to do. Move in the direction of love. “Move the way you feel joy.” – Osho
